It’s Spring! Rebalance And Detoxify By Applying Ayurvedic Principles Of Health

Ayurveda recognizes that Winter is typically a time when our body accumulates toxins. This happens because in Winter we eat heavier foods, and as it is darker and unpleasant to be outdoors, we exercise less. This slows down our metabolism and allows toxins to build up.

Spring is the season during which you could think about doing some kind of detoxification process. If you consider Spring from an Ayurvedic viewpoint, its increased daily temperatures and light offers a great opportunity to become more active. Ayurvedic teachings may also encourage us to select lighter meals, and to think carefully about the kinds of foods we choose to eat each day.

Spring is the most obvious season to fully commit to a process of renewal and balancing. You may want to start a new routine of regular walks, which might be around a local lake or park, or maybe along the beach to enjoy Australia’s natural beauty. You might also want to begin Meditation or Yoga classes.

You might also consider doing some sort of fast. In the Western world we might think this means that we should stop eating entirely: however, this Western approach to fasting isn’t at all appealing, makes you feel weaker rather than well, and can even increase the Vata dosha. This is not a useful or positive approach to one’s health!

Ayurveda will encourage a more gentle and pleasant approach to fasting. You might choose to enjoy a light soup as your evening meal for one week, or enjoy kichadi, which is a lightly-spiced mixture of rice and mung-dahl, every day for lunch. This is definitely a far more agreeable approach to fasting!

Another thing that will help your Ayurvedic detox is the consumption of healthy Ayurvedic teas. A tea that promotes the digestive fire (Agni) and that is balancing for all of the Ayurvedic body types is made by placing a teaspoon each of coriander, fennel and cumin seeds in a teapot and adding 2 – 3 cups of boiling water. After 3 to 5 minutes of steeping, this tea can then be enjoyed. There are several other teas which are also very helpful.

Make this Spring the time that you make some Ayurveda-inspired adjustments to your health and lifestyle that may allow your body and mind to enjoy greater health!
